UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub details past Oxycontin addiction

Feb

 16

According to Brendan Schaub he battled an addiction to Oxycontin after his bout against Mirko Cro Cop

Brendan Schaub was a guest Joe Rogan's latest 'Fight Companion' podcast last Saturday, and the UFC heavyweight revealed some details about an addiction he had following his bout against Mirko Cro Cop in 2011. Schaub knocked out the MMA legend, but in the process of getting one of the biggest wins of his career, he also sustained a broken nose that required surgery."They put these brackets up there, stitched them in, so when it moved I had to chill like that for six weeks. It was the most pain I've ever been in," Schaub said as he spoke about recovering from surgery. "Popping painkillers everyday. Got addicted to them. Got addicted to them."Schaub took Oxycontin, a brand for a timed-release formula of oxycodone. It's a strong painkiller, and the somewhat controversial prescription drug has also been known for it's addictive properties."I was probably doing it hardcore for like four months. Then my best friend Joe Klopfenstein came over and took them from me. They just knew I was taking it non-stop."Even after the brackets were taken out and he had recovered, Schaub says he was still taking Oxycontin, about 6 a day before the intervention happened."Horrible! Super itchy. I was real irritable all the time," he said after getting off the drug. "And then I got a fight with Nogueira. Perfect timing."Watch the clip below and check out the entire transcript (courtesy of Mookie Alexander) of the conversation about the topic:

Schaub: "When I fought Cro-Cop I think it was $10k$10k. And after that fight I had to have re-constructive nose surgery."

Rogan: "You had to get your nose fixed?"

Schaub: "Reconstructive nose surgery after Cro-Cop."

Rogan: "What happened?"

Schaub: "He hit me with an elbow and it shattered my nose, like, completely shattered everything in my nose. Second round, too. I was like 'Why the fuck am I so tired? I'm in great shape!', and I couldn't breathe out of my nose and it was just all blood just going, gushing down my throat."

Rogan: "How did they fix it? What did they have to do?

Schaub: "Uh they went in and put like some mesh thing in it, because all the bones were so fractured, and like, tiny fractures ... put some mesh thing in it. I was trying to get a legit nose job, I was like 'Yo doc, take a little of the tip.'"    "But then they put these brackets up there, stitched them in, so when it moved I had to chill like that for six weeks. It was the most pain I've ever been in. Popping painkillers everyday. Got addicted to them. Got addicted to them."

Rogan: "Really? No shit?!"

Schaub: "Because I had a doctor who was like 'Oh I'm cool, I'm hip, here's 200 Oxycontin.' and I was like 'Hell yeah!'. Got the things taken out, next thing I know I'm still filling in the prescription, popping every single day, didn't even notice. Finally a buddy had to come to the house and take 'em from me. It was some intervention shit."

Rogan: "Whoa. How many were you taking a day?"

Schaub: "Probably six."

Bravo: "Oxycontins? When was this, what year?"    Rogan: "Wow. Oh my god for how long?"

Schaub: "This was right after I fought Cro-Cop. I had like, a 10-11 month layoff because of it. And then I fought Nogueira after that."

Rogan: "So you had a 10-11 month layoff because of Oxycontin addiction?"

Schaub: "No because I had a nosejob."

Rogan: "Okay, but how long did the Oxycontin addiction kick in?"

Schaub: "I was probably doing it hardcore for like four months. Then my best friend Joe Klopfenstein came over and took them from me."

Bravo: "What kind of stupid shit were you doing on it, where they had to intervene?"

Schaub: "They just knew I was taking it non-stop."

Bravo: "How were you acting? They must have been-- because if you were just normal like this, people wouldn't even notice."

Bravo: "Were you late everywhere? Were you sleeping all day?"

Schaub: "I think I was just out of it all the time. Like, out of it. You know I'm a guy who talks a lot, I think I was just kind of like this f*ckin' asshole who just, like, chills. Low-beat. I was super depressed."

Justin Milos: "How was it coming off of them? How did it feel?"

Schaub: "Horrible! Super itchy I was real irritable all the time. And then I got a fight with Nogueira. Perfect timing."

Matt Brown Gets In Fist Fight Outside Of The Cage

 Feb

 12

UFC welterweight contender Matt Brown was recently involved in a light, possibly violent, punching altercation with his former BJJ coach, the severity of which depends on whose side you believe.

Taking to Facebook was Brown:

“Alright I gotta say something now I suppose. I have WAY bigger fish to fry, but I can’t help it anymore being that my name is being defamed by a former friend. Yes, I punched the him in the face. No, I am not a violent person. I was provoked. I was pushed first. He put his hands on me first and then cried to the police about it after. That is a bitch move. Not how 2 grown ass men sort things out. I’m not going to give the long version and I’m not going to comment a lot about it. I don’t need the stress and I don’t feel like I need to expend the energy on someone so pathetic. I just absolutely have to let everyone know that I was pushed first and also walked away first and have stayed away and tried to let things simmer down (to no avail). So no more OCC for me for now. Hopefully people see through the lies and see the truth of the matter. I’m not perfect but I’m not in the wrong here. That’s it.”

That’s Matt’s version, but his coach Rodrigo tells a different tale:

Well, I wouldn’t say anything here and let the law system speak but looks like the other side of the story is posting things on facebook and trying to get people with them.

Here is what happened clear and simple.

This UFC fighter who I coached til the day of the incident assaulted me with multiple punches in the head while I was seating in the chair behind the desk.

Makes even worse when he knew about my eye condition and the eye surgery that I had only 3 weeks before the day he assaulted me. He also knew I had 16 internal stitches in my eye.

Those stitches popped from 2pm to 7pm according the doctor and I had another surgery yesterday.

In fact I had 4 surgeries in this eye in the last 15 months and he knew about my struggle with this eye.

The same person that did that to me invited me to do sauna at Life Time fitness on sunday 2 days before the incident, I stopped by his house where I dropped a gift for one of his kids and we went to sauna and there he said I was his best friend and he was glad he could see now a bunch ok fake people he was surrounded with.

Now some facts that I will have to put on the fan here so you guys can have more material to make your own judgment.
Only one person was there when this happened and the person is his muay thai coach that he brings whenever he has a fight scheduled.

This time he flew this guy that was in Spain.

He also gives this guy a place to stay and even one of his cars so he can drive around the city to go train him on top of the 4,500 dollars that he pays for the training camp for each coach including me.

With that said this muay thai coach that lives in Thailand basically sold his soul for it, 4,500 american dollars is a lot of money in Thailand. Maybe in his mind he was just sticking for his friend but NO, the truth is you are making fake statements to the police which is a very serious thing and a crime.

You should say what you saw and not lie to the police because you are “sticking for a friend”, also I always tried to help you even putting you to teach classes at the gym so you could make some extra money and thought he was also my friend and always had good relationship with.

Anyways, the person that assaulted me and the only witness (his long time friend and muay thai coach) told the police that I pushed him first and that he only threw one punch.

If you are a little intelligent it would be hard to believe that someone that doesn’t train any type of striking activities for the last 15 months because of an eye condition would push and start a fight with someone that is active and only 4 weeks before the biggest fight of his life, plus til the moment that he assaulted me I was still his coach.

The truth is we were having an argument and he started to yell “If you keep talking I can’t fucking talk” and repeated that a few times before he went crazy and flipped the glass table of the desk to the floor and came after me with multiple punches on my head while I was seating in the chair.

I stood up leaning my back against the wall and all I did was cover my eye with one arm and yell “my eye you son of bitch don’t touch my eye” while he was throwing punches in my head.

His muay thai coach and only witness didn’t stop him, he slowly walked behind him and said “ok, enough” so he basically stopped because he wanted to.

Then the muay thai coach was in between me and him and I said “you are a piece of shit coward because you know I can’t fight back” and I said “If I could we would fight til someone die here, I don’t punch not because I don’t have balls but because I can go blind forever” and as soon as I said that he pushed his friend out of his way and came after me again with another set of multiple punches in the head while I was just covering again.
And he left, his friend left with him.

I called 911
His friend came back minutes later to pick up his training gear and said ” He fucked up bad, that’s bad, he broke the chain” and left as police was pulling over.

I said “You saw everything” and he said “I didn’t see anything” and left.

Later that day the brother of the fighter that assaulted called me because he is a lawyer and he asked me “What do you want to make things go smoothly?”.

I said “I want to know what you would want if you go blind for the rest of your life, I want what is right and hopefully the judge is gonna say it”.

Later that day I got informed that the person that assaulted me and his muay thai coach told police that I shoved him first and he only threw one punch, it was probably a super punch then because made a few bumps in my head, 1 big one and also hurt my eye.

Now he is putting this bullshit on facebook saying he defended himself and that he is not a violent person.

Who knows you also knows that you are lieing.

I won’t even bring your past here but I will bring what you call the people that are supporting you right now.

You call your wrestling coach an alcoholic, you call your radio friend a pussy and fake black belt, and you also make fun of some of your sponsors and more as well as talk shit about the other gyms in Columbus with 2 in special, Ronin and Grove City Jiu-Jitsu.

I could stay all day here listing all that.

One thing I need to make straight here, I love his kids and everybody close knows how I feel about them but I can’t let this pass because I know his family.

I also have family that loves me and they would not want their son/brother/cousin losing their vision because of one coward assault.

I will leave it to the lawyers now and pray that people will find out who is telling the truth and who is lieing.

And this part of the message here goes to Jeremy Loper, the person that wrote a post on his page about Ohio Combat Club today and then blocked me, I wonder why.

First of all looks bad for you to tell all the world that I was the best jiu-jitsu instructor that you ever had and now trash talk the gym. Who will take you serious??

You claim you were used for “publicity”?? Your kids karate program had only 3 paying students in 4 months. If you think you were used for publicity you should reconsider your marketing plan. I bet I will get more students now with you trash talking the gym.

Even your “friend” that assaulted me tells everyone you are not a fighter or real black belt and just want to be “cool” hanging out at the gym, in fact when he heard you are going to Dallas to his fight he said he doesn’t want pussies around him in the fight week, that’s your friend right there.

Also he tells people closer to him that you are only his friend because he is “famous” and that if he wasn’t “famous” you wouldn’t even talk to him. In this case he claims that it’s you using him for publicity, like the podcast you have with him, he says you want him on your podcast and the other guy from fox sports so you can have some recognition in the mma world.

I would say he is right on that, you even told me that you don’t like Jon Anik because he is “taking” your spot, what????

For your information the guy that assaulted me was the one who told me to put you to teach there because I wanted Dan Spohn teaching, which is a legit karate instructor and fighter.

By the way, I can’t even count how many times he told his kids “let me teach you real fighting and not what you are learning with Loper”, again that’s your friend right there.

And I am glad any type of cancer is out of OCC, for those who stayed I am sure they already noticed a better environment.

About you saying you invited me to Christmas at your house you just forgot to mention you told me I couldn’t go anymore when I was on my way there and I would even dress as Santa Claus for your kids like I did to Sawchuk’s family, the reason you said I couldn’t go anymore it’s because I had the puppy with me and you said someone there was allergic to it.

You guys and your your group of “cool” people can all turn your backs to me.

I am laughing in the inside and I thank God for how wonderful he is in taking all the bad people away from my life.

At the end of the day is what gives me peace and I am sure have a reason for all this that is happening right now.

I can’t wait to all the TRUTH comes up and I am gonna count how many people are gonna come to me and apologize to take that person side.

Unfortunately for them I will not be friends with those again, when I say unfortunately for them is because who knows me also knows that when I am friends with someone is because I like them as a person and not because of interests like the “friendships” in your group where everybody talk shit about everybody.

I can forgive but they are out of my life.

That’s all I can say for now.

Police and law system is gonna handle the rest.

The gym still open and classes are even better now.

And while all we have are details from both sides, Brown did take to the UG with some additional comments on the subject:

I would gladly answer any question as I have zero to hide and am an honest, open person. He is threatening legal action right now so I’m going to assume it’s in my best interest not to post anything specific. I don’t actually think he’ll have a leg to stand on since even the cops basically laughed at the story.

2 fighters got in to a fight at a fight gym. You’d think we’d just go grab a beer and laugh about it like every other man on the earth did at some point in their life.

…Again, I can’t say as much as I would like. I will wash my hands of this now, leave the UG for a while so I can focus on my fight and hope that this blows over like it already should have. Now go listen to my podcast and f*ck off motherf*ckers!

Anderson Silva Pulled From ‘TUF Brazil’ Coaching Slot

Feb

   9

Just moments ago the UFC announced that Anderson Silva will no longer be a coach on TUF Brazil 4 following his recent failed drug test.

Silva has yet to appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but will do so on February 17th.

The UFC sent the following press release regarding the situation:

The UFC® announced today that Brazilian legend Rodrigo “Big Nog” Nogueira will join the cast of The Ultimate Fighter® Brazil 4, the organization’s signature television reality series, as coach following the departure of UFC middleweight Anderson Silva.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission, which regulates The Ultimate Fighter series’ exhibition fights filmed in Las Vegas, requested that Silva cease participation in the series as a result of his temporary suspension following the recently announced preliminary results of his January 9 pre-fight drug test for UFC® 183.

The UFC and Globo, the show’s Brazilian broadcaster, respect the Commission’s decision, which will allow Silva to focus his attention on the matter before the Commission. Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC will continue to support him as this process unfolds.

The series, which began filming in Las Vegas on Monday, Feb. 2, originally featured Silva and former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as head coaches. Rua will continue on as coach of Team Shogun versus the newly formed Team Nogueira, which will also include Big Nog’s twin brother Rogerio “Lil Nog” Nogueira as an assistant coach.

AFS Academy Cleans House

 Feb

   7

February 7th Trotters Legacy came to Richmond KY, but they

had no idea of the storm that they were going to release.

There were 4 fighters on the card from the AFS Academy and

they ran through the competition. Tyler Black made short work

of  Matt Matlock with his dominate TKO win early in the Round

1 to secure the MMA Therapy TKO of the Night Award. Then

Brandon Campbell had a quick submission to end Thomas Agrue

with a triagle choke in Round 1 to become the new Trotter’s Legacy

125 lbs Champion. Dustin Short then took over in a very exciting

fight with Stephen Francis. Dustin would defend his 145 lbs Title

in a great fight winning the Decision 30-27,30-27,and 29-28 in a fight

that got the MMA Therapy Fight of the Night Award. The only Professional

Fight of the night showcased the submission skills of Adam Fritz who

transitioned from one submission to another before locking up a triangle, and

the win and the MMA Therapy Submission of the Night. So a clean sweep 4-0

and took all 3 awards not a bad night for AFS Academy.

Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz has not been overturned to a no-contest yet

Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz have a long way to go until the Nevada State Athletic Commission is finished dealing with the two UFC 183 fighters following positive drug tests being returned by both men in recent days.

Silva and Diaz may have already been tried and sentenced in the public eye, but they still have due process awaiting them when it comes to the commission and possible punishment being handed out.

One piece of the puzzle that has not been settled yet is whether or not the fight between Silva and Diaz will be overturned to a no-contest.

A report surfaced on Friday in Fola, a Brazilian newspaper (via Bloody Elbow) that quoted Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett saying that the fight between Silva and Diaz will be ruled a no-contest.

While chances are the fight will eventually be overturned, the statement that it's already been changed isn't true.

Speaking to FOX Sports on Friday, Nevada State Athletic Commission chairman Francisco Aguilar confirmed that the fight between Silva vs. Diaz has not been overturned and can't be overturned until a motion is passed by a majority of the commission.

Any penalties, suspensions or changes to the outcome of the fight have to be presented as a motion and then voted on by the commission to enact the order.  In other words, the fight might end up as a no-contest when the governing body finally finishes the case for Silva and Diaz, but nothing has happened as of now.

The next step in the process will be Feb. 17 when the commission meets and likely hands down temporary suspensions to both Silva and Diaz pending a full disciplinary hearing.

The future hearing -- likely held in March or April -- will then allow Silva and Diaz the chance to argue their case before the commission decides on punishment, which could then include the fight being overturned.

Anderson Silva tests positive for steroids Nick Diaz for pot in UFC 183 drug screenings

Anderson Silva's victory over Nick Diaz is being stripped from the record books as NSAC director Bob Bennett confirms the bout will be switched to a 'no contest'.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Anderson Silva, after an impressive win against Nick Diaz at UFC 183 the UFC announced that the former long term champion had tested positive for two performance enhancing drugs in his Jan 9th pre-fight drug test. While Silva adamantly denies any wrong doing NAC executive director Bob Bennett has decided to overturn Silva's victory. In light of the failed drugs test the bout result will now be changed to a no contest which could have massive financial repercussions for Silva.

Speaking to Brazilian newspaper Folha Bennett said :

'Yes, it will be ruled a NC (no contest). I don't know if he will receive the win bonus after this change. That's UFC's call, but a percentage of his purse will be held because of this episode.'

Anderson Silva now faces the prospect of a substantial fine as well as a long term suspension and as Bennett hinted the UFC might also  revoke his win bonus which is likely sizable.

With this latest development Silva's record is now without a win since October 2012 and it seems unlikely that he will have the opportunity to add to his win column in the foreseeable future. Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for more news and updates as this story continues to unfold.

It's not surprising that Nick Diaz has been busted for pot, again. But, In a statement, the UFC has revealed taht Anderson Silva failed a pre-fight drug test for an anabolic steroid.

A storm is brewing. Kevin Iole broke the news on Tuesday, over Twitter that both the headliners at UFC 183 failed drug tests surrounding the event. According to Iole, Anderson Silva failed a pre-fight drug test, and Nick Diaz failed a post fight screening. Reportedly, Diaz tested postitive for Marijuana metabolites after the event. For Anderson, however, the results are much more serious. The UFC has released an official statement, disclosing that Anderson Silva has failed a pre-fight drug screening for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone:    "On February 3, 2015, the UFC organization was notified by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Anderson Silva tested positive for Drostanolone metabolites on his Jan. 9 out of competition drug test. UFC's understanding is that further testing will be conducted by the Commission to confirm these preliminary results.    "Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC, in Brazil as well as around the world. UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results.    "The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by its athletes."

Dana White: ‘Gastelum Was A Completely Different Person On Fight Night’

Leading up to UFC 183, co-main event fighter Kelvin Gastelum missed weight by 9 pounds for his bout against Tyron Woodley.

Immediately fans began wondering why officials allowed the bout to continue with Gastelum coming in so overweight. News surfaced that Gastelum had been ill, and nearly passed out, and even taken to the hospital.

UFC President Dana White elaborated at the post-fight press conference.

“I didn’t know if he had passed out or not, but he was definitely having a hard cut,. They took him to the hospital, and he was definitely in a bad way (on Friday).”

“Even after Tyron said he’d accept the fight with him 10 pounds over, we still didn’t know if Gastelum was going to fight. We didn’t know until (fight night).”

“They obviously let him get some fluids, rest and sleep. He woke up (on Saturday), and they reevaluated him and said he was OK to fight. When I talked to him … when he got here at the arena, he was a completely different person than he was (on Friday), as you can imagine.”

The commission fined Gastelum 30% of his purse, however his opponent Tyron Woodley said he wouldn’t accept his opponents money.

Cupcake”: ‘I’m the one to beat Ronda”

"The Spider" revealed that he had asked a Brazilian gospel rapper and Usher to create a new song for his return to the octagon, but the UFC president instated a veto.

Anderson Silva thought about changing his entrance song but had this request denied by the UFC president Dana White.

In a conversation with members of Brazilian media, the former champion revealed that he wanted his trademark "Ain't no sunshine" entrance song by DMX to be replaced by song that a Brazilian gospel rapper was going to develop with Usher.

"Ask Dana. Everytime that I talk about changing my song, he says no. Pregador Luo (Preacher Luo, in the translation) was working with Usher, who is my personal friend, in a new song but it seems that Dana doesn't want me to change, so we won't change."

Anderson explained that he was interested in switching his song because his comeback to the octagon represents a special moment for him.

"It's like my first time stepping inside the, you know? Everything is feeling so new for me. I'm returning. Man, I have to win. I'm feeling like a kid with a new toy."

Once "Ain't no Sunshine" is played on Saturday night, Anderson will face Nick Diaz in the main event of UFC 183. It will mark Spider's first fight since his gruesome leg injury, and a 14-month spell on the sidelines.

Just days after making the event official, there is a main event set for the NAAFS card that will take place on March 7 at the Canton Civic Center in Northeast Ohio.

And it’ll be a battle of the big boys, as John Hawk (10-5) will face Curt Lemmon (4-0) for the vacant NAAFS heavyweight title. Both fighters have posted about the matchup on their Facebook pages, and it has apparently been signed and made official. The title hasn’t been active since 2011, when Stipe Miocic was signed by the UFC after earning a victory over Bobby Brents to claim the belt.

Hawk actually won the NAAFS title once before in 2010, when he defeated Joe McCall at Caged Fury 9. The Strong Style product then made the decision to drop down to light heavyweight, where he competed for the 205-pound title on two different occasions. “Big John” has also posted a 2-1 record under the Bellator MMA banner, including an upset victory over Marcus Vanttinen at Bellator 66 in 2012. Hawk made the return to heavyweight in 2014, earning impressive victories over veteran heavyweights William Penn and Brents to earn another title shot for NAAFS.

Lemmon comes in looking for what would already be his second pro title, as he claimed the EFP heavyweight belt with a victory over Jeremy Linville in July. The 26-year-old has yet to taste defeat in his professional or amateur career, going 11-0 overall with 10 stoppage victories. He earned the title shot with an impressive first round submission over Tim Dunn at the last NAAFS event in December.

This is actually the second bout that is set for the event, as officials announced a lightweight bout featuring George Comer (5-1) vs. Joey Holt (4-2) last week.

The next NAAFS event will be on January 31 near Toledo, as Antonio Castillo Jr. and Isaiah Chapman will square off for the organization’s bantamweight title.

"Cyborg" will defend her Invicta FC featherweight title against Charmaine Tweet on Feb. 27 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp confirmed to MMAFighting.com. Of course, Rousey's UFC women's bantamweight title fight against Cat Zingano, the co-main event of UFC 184, is also set for the following night at the Staples Center in L.A.

Justino (12-1, 1 NC) hasn't fought since July 2013 when she defeated Marloes Coenen to became Invicta's inaugural featherweight champion. She was scheduled to make her much-anticipated bantamweight debut in December, however, an ankle injury forced her off the card. Since her win against Coenen, the Brazilian veteran went 1-1 in Muay Thai competition.

Tweet (6-4) has won her last two fights in a row and five of her last six. The 37-year-old Canadian is 1-1 under the Invicta banner.

The decision to book this main event in L.A. is without a doubt a shrewd move by the all-women's promotion, who will look to capitalize on the UFC being in town the same weekend and the long-simmering feud between Rousey and Justino. Most recently, Rousey said on "The MMA Hour" that Justino should be charged with "attempted negligent homicide" after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug stanozolol in 2011. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The full Invicta FC 11 card is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Kansas City, Mo. – Invicta Fighting Championships today announced the entire fight card for Invicta FC 11, which will stream live and exclusively on UFC Fight Pass from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Friday, Feb. 27.

In the night’s headline bout, Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino (12-1, 1 NC) will return to action and defend her title against Canadian challenger Charmaine ‘Not So Sweet’ Tweet (6-4).

Justino was originally scheduled to headline Invicta FC 10 last December, but was forced off the card after suffering a full thickness rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament in her left ankle. She has not competed in MMA since July of 2013 when she defeated Marloes Coenen via fourth-round TKO at Invicta FC 6 to capture the 145-pound belt.

After competing in the first lightweight bout in Invicta FC history, Tweet returns to the featherweight division having won five of her last six fights. In her most recent appearance, at Invicta FC 8 in September of 2014, she stopped Veronica Rothenhausler via first-round TKO to pick up her sixth career first-round finish.

Two highly touted strawweight strikers share the co-main event spotlight, as undefeated 21-year-old Alexa Grasso (6-0) of Mexico meets 20-year-old Japanese prospect Mizuki Inoue (8-3).

DeAnna ‘The Argentine Assassin’ Bennett (6-0) brings an unblemished record down to 115 pounds for her strawweight debut, squaring off with recently signed submission specialist Lynn ‘Lights Out’ Alvarez (6-3).

Rounding out the four-fight main card is a bantamweight scrap between Mexican knockout artist Irene ‘Robles’ Aldana (4-1) and promotional newcomer Melanie LaCroix (3-2).

The full eight-fight card for Invicta FC 11 can be found below:

Featherweight Title: Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino (12-1, 1 NC) vs. Charmaine Tweet (6-4)
Strawweight: Alexa Grasso (6-0) vs. Mizuki Inoue (8-3)

Apparently, Indiana promotions are trying to revolutionize mixed martial arts by introducing new concepts to the sport. Earlier this month Elite Amateur Fight League held their inaugural show. Their concept featured teams similar to that of the now-defunct International Fight League but was more focused on scoring points as a team to advance further in the tournament.

Returning to the 8 Seconds Saloon in Indianapolis, Indiana, Midwest Fight Series is set to unveil a new, and from what I can tell, an intriguing concept. “Red vs. Blue” will pit the two corners against each other throughout the entire event.

Now, when I first heard the “Red vs. Blue” tagline I initially thought of the game Halo and the mini-series produced that goes by the same name. I never played Halo, more of a Call of Duty fan myself, but the series Red vs. Blue is definitely worth checking out.

At every show, there are two corners, red and blue. Every promotion, as far as assigning corners, operates differently. Depending on the organization, it will vary on what corner comes out first, as well as which corner the fighter reports to.

Even if one gym brings several fighters it doesn’t necessarily mean everyone will have the same corner. That’s going to change. Moving forward, this will not be the case- all team members will be in the same corner for the duration of the event. This rule will ensure teammates will also be competing on the same team, whether that be red or blue.

So essentially every fighter competing out of the red corner will now be on a team, and likewise for the blue corner. Now that we have that part of the concept down let’s move on to the individual fights. Every fight, the athletes have the opportunity to score points. The amount of points scored depends on how the fight ends. Let’s take a look at the breakdown of the scoring system:

Split/Unanimous Decision: 1 point
KO/TKO/Submission: 2 points
Unsportsmanlike Stoppage/Disqualification: 2 points to the opposing team

The team with the most points at the end of the event will be declared the winning team. Everyone who competed on the team, even if they lost their individual match, will be awarded a gear bag. The bag can consists of rash guards, supplements, water bottles, coupons, and more but will vary by event. Now in the event of a tie the two captains, selected by the individual teams before the show starts, will flip a coin to determine which team wins.

Even The Fans Can Win

When fans enter the venue, they will have the option to select between a red and blue wristband if they are there to see a particular fighter. Otherwise, officials will be alternating between the two colors between patrons. Fans who have the winning color at the end of the night will also win- they can purchase tickets to the next event at a discounted price.

The goal behind this is to get the fans involved in every fight, not just the fights they came specifically to see. To make things even better, the organization offering $15.00 general admission tickets to the event this Friday night. So for those in the vicinity, you have no excuses not to be at 8 Seconds Saloon.

What are your thoughts on the new concept?

Another five fighters have found themselves on the outside of the UFC looking in after recent losses.

No allegedly here, through various sources the release of five fighters from the UFC have been confirmed, as well as confirmation of one other probable release that was hinted at by the UFC a couple weeks ago. MMAFighting reports that Tom Niinimaki and Sean Soriano have been released from their Zuffa contracts. Accompanying them, Mike Rhodes announced, via Twitter that he was no longer fighting for the UFC, and Igor Pokrajac spoke to Fight Site in Croatia to give the official word that his contract had been terminated. MMAFighting has also reported that Alexis Dufresne has been released from the UFC, following her loss to Marion Reneau at UFC 182. Along with these new reports, the release of Rodrigo Damm was confirmed, Damm was briefly removed from the UFC active roster earlier this month, sparking speculation that his contract had been terminated.

For fighters like Dufresne, Rhodes, and Soriano their release from the UFC seems more like a bump in the road (and perhaps even a fortuitous bump) more than a coffin nail in their careers. All three have shown some flashes of potential; Rhodes and Soriano both looked decent against strong runs of competition, while going 0-3 under Zuffa. A chance to go back to a lower level of competition and rebuild their confidence while rounding out their overall game, may be just what they need. I'd expect any and all of them back on the tail of a few wins or a late notice injury replacement.

For fighters like Niinimaki and Pokrajac, it feels much more like the end of the road with Zuffa. Certainly in as thin a division as LHW is Pokrajac could have a chance to rebuild his record, and Niinimaki seems as though he still has some tread on the tires. But, but both fighters have been in the game for quite a while, and neither men put on the kind of performances in the UFC that's likely to put them at the top of Silva or Shelby's list for a return trip. Stay tuned for more updates, as the UFC appears to be releasing fighters at a much quicker pace than they have been over the past year or two, and of course, they're always bringing in more new talent. No doubt the next roster update news is just around the corner.

I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me. I’m a great place for you to tell a story and let your users know a little more about you.

It should be a good fight, [Nick Diaz] couldn’t have had better training for it. I brought in Artem Levin for him to work with, Chidi Njokuani and of course myself (Joe Schilling). Chidi was perfect to finish the camp actually, he moves just like Anderson, he’s got a similar style.

“But everybody I brought in for Nick to spar with is a better kickboxer than the guy he is going to fight, you know? Artem is a better kickboxer than Anderson, I’m a better kickboxer than Anderson, Chidi has got even better movement than Anderson. It was a good camp. I was trying to knock Nick out in sparring all the time, and not knocking him out.”

“I think it would be embarrassing for [Anderson] in there with me. The more I have studied Anderson Silva for this fight camp of Nick’s the more I think he is good at kickboxing for MMA but in a professional kickboxing fight he would get wasted.”

“They have all these videos coming out of Anderson in training, doing like jump knees and s–t, but I look at them and think he doesn’t look that good. He is moving like an old guy. He doesn’t have that fluidity that guys like me and Artem Levin have.”

During a recent chat with Bloodyelbow.com’s John Joe O’Regan, Nick Diaz training partner Joe Schilling talked about Anderson Silva’s skills.

Do you agree?

Diaz Camp: ‘Anderson Silva Not A Good Kickboxer

Can I make a joke first? It would be nice if they could both punch each other’s faces, they could fall together. I’m serious. No, i’m kidding. I want Vitor to win but I think that Weidman will beat him if the fight passes the second round. I don’t prefer any of them, my focus is on Nick Diaz, is to return and be happy doing the things that I have always done.”

In a recent interview with Brazil’s Globo, UFC legend Anderson Silva made his prediction for Chris Weidman vs. Vitor Belfort.

“I have a lot of vested interest in that fight and I really have mixed feelings about who I would prefer to win. I think if Zingano beats Rousey, it’s a much faster road to the title for myself so there’s a benefit there for me. The fact that our first fight had a lot of fireworks to it — it was a very exciting fight. I won the first two rounds and I just feel it was stopped too quickly in the third round, but it is what it is. If Cat wins, there’s a big argument why I would get the next title shot. Especially on a three fight win streak if I beat Sara McMann, that puts a huge notch on my belt.”

“If Ronda wins, she’s beating all the other girls, so all I have to do is ward off the other No. 1 contenders like I have been. I think I have the best shot at beating her and I think I’ve proven that going into the third round with her. Regardless, it’s always fun for me to fight Ronda. I enjoy it, I thrive on it, because my No. 1 goal is to become the best fighter that I can be and Ronda always pushes me to do that. Every time I think I become a better fighter because of Ronda. She pushes me and motivates me in ways that other people just don’t have the ability to do. She motivates me to be a better fighter and a better person. A stronger fighter and a stronger person. So, I kind of revel in that. It’s something I look forward to and I hope I will have another chance to fight her. I think beating McMann makes a great argument.”

All eyes on a title shot for former UFC title challenger Miesha Tate.

“Aldo said what we needed to hear. He’s the king, Chad Mendes is the prince and McGregor is the joker. Enough said. I think that McGregor is a cool guy but Aldo is a lot cooler. Aldo is my brother until I die. Hit him a lot, Aldo. Please, do it. Hit him a lot.”

“It’s impossible to compare them. McGregor has no condition of facing Aldo. How would he do this? How? Do you think that this boy will bear what Mendes could? Never! I would run from Aldo if he were at my weight class. I would not be silly of fighting him.”

During a recent chat with GLOBO, former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva talked about the pending featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor.

UFC Announces International Events For2015

The NAAFS will return to the Canton Civic Center in Northeast Ohio on March 7, and the first bout is set for the card, as George Comer (5-1) will take on Joey Holt (4-2) in a lightweight battle that has been years in the making.

Comer, who is more affectionately known as “Bonesaw,” has just one loss in his career, which came at the hands of Clint Musser in his professional debut. Since then, however, he is undefeated with five straight wins. All of the wins have been impressive, including victories over Khama Worthy, Stephen Singleton, Brian Camozzi, and Anthony Morgan. Most recently, he stopped the hype train known as Joe Lile Jr. with a unanimous decision victory in the main event at Coveted Fighting Championship 3 last June. This will be the first appearance since then for the GriffonRawl fighter, who has competed almost exclusively for the NAAFS during his career where he has posted a 14-1 overall record.

Holt comes in looking to start a winning streak, as he snapped a two-fight losing streak in his last outing with a first round submission over Adam Assenza at PFC3 in October. The East Liverpool native also possesses a 3-0 pro boxing record, but he returned to MMA in in 2013 after a nearly two-year layoff. It was a rough return for Holt, as he dropped back-to-back fights to Julian Lane and Rob Hanna under the Pinnacle FC banner before turning things around with the win over Assenza. Holt actually holds a victory over the only man to defeat Comer, as he stopped Clint Musser with a highlight reel flying knee knockout at Bellator 51 in 2011. Interestingly enough, that bout also took place inside the Canton Civic Center.

Multiple other bouts have already been rumored for the card, but the most substantiated rumor for the event is that multiple time Bellator MMA veteran John Hawk (10-5) will be competing for the heavyweight title. The former NAAFS champ has gone 2-0 in his return to heavyweight, with wins over William Penn and Bobby Brents.

The next NAAFS event will be on January 31 near Toledo, as Antonio Castillo Jr. and Isaiah Chapman will square off for the organization’s bantamweight title.

European fight fans will have two more opportunities to watch a live UFC event this year.

At a special press conference held earlier today, German fighter Nick Hein announced that the octagon will return to Berlin on June 20 for UFC Fight Night 69.

In addition to that news, Scottish strawweight fighter Joanne Calderwood announced that the promotion will make its first trip to her native country (Scotland) on July 18 for UFC Fight Night 73 in Glasgow.

Frank Mir: “I can’t be defeated anymore”

“My training is going well, I have no injuries. I have to be faster than him. Normally, I fight at the striking range against my opponents but I can try to take him down. Bigfoot’s wrestling isn’t as good as his striking and his grappling, which are good. If I take him down, I can submit him. If I have a bad performance, obviously I’ll think about retirement. But I’ll face a strong guy and, if we deliver a great show, I won’t quit fighting if I lose. But I can’t think about it, I gave to come well prepared because I can’t be defeated anymore.”“It’s a big honor to have the chance to show my Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil. The only things missing in my career is to fight in Brazil and in Japan. I expect an audience booing me and being very noisy, like they do at soccer games, because it’s their culture.”In a new interview with Brazil’s Globo former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir talked about his pending showdown with “Bigfoot” Silva. The two heavyweights clash in the UFC main event on February 22.
